Leider kann ich nicht pünktlich den 1. Mai einhalten, 2 weil die Formalitäten bei der Credit-Anstalt noch nicht durchgeführt sind. 3 Man wird wahrscheinlich nächste Woche das Gut 4 schätzen, u. werde ich alles mögliche aufbieten, um Dir sobald als möglich den Rest auszufolgen. Bitte, sei mir darob nicht böse, Dein Geld ist sicher. 5 Entschuldige diese Schrift, aber durch den plötzlichen Tod Richtera’s 6 bin ich ein wenig aus der Fassung. Ich fahre morgen früh für 5 Tage nach Oberoesterr. um für den Moment auf andere Gedanken zu kommen. © Transcription Ian Bent, 2023 |
Unfortunately, I cannot adhere strictly to May 1, 2 because the formalities at the Creditanstalt have still not been completed. 3 The property 4 will probably be valued next week, and I will move heaven and earth to issue you the balance as soon as possible. Please do not think ill of me; your money is secure. 5 Excuse the writing, but I am a little upset by the sudden death of Richtera. 6 Tomorrow morning I travel to Upper Austria for five days, to take my mind off it for a short while. © Translation Ian Bent, 2023 |

Footnotes1 Receipt of this letter and subsequent action are recorded in Heinrich’s diary for May 2, 1930: “Von Mozio (Br.): in den nächsten Tagen tritt in der Creditanstalt die betreffende Abteilung ins Leben, dann Ordnung. — [… ] An Wilhelm (Br.): schicke den Brief von Mozio.” (“From Mozio (letter): in the next few days, the relevant sum will become available at the Creditanstalt, then things will be okay. — [...] To Wilhelm (letter): I send him Mozio's letter.”). — The form of salutation, to his “brother,” is in part explained by the fact that the next letter on the following day, OJ 14/5, [33], of which the salutation is identical, is addressed to the oldest of the three brothers, Wilhelm. 2 Heinrich’s diary for April 25, 1930 reports: “Von Wilhelm (Br.): habe Mozio empfohlen, mir das Geld bis 1. V. auszufolgen.” (“From Wilhelm (letter): he has advised Mozio to issue the money to me by May 1.”). 3 “Formalitäten” and “noch nicht … sind” (“formalities” and “have … completed”): underlined in crayon by Heinrich. 4 The property, Arzberg, in Reichraming, which forms the basis of Moriz’s family investment. 5 “Geld ist sicher” (“money is secure”): underlined in crayon by Heinrich. 6 It was Leopold Richtera for whom Moriz’s former wife Lisl left her husband in 1929.
