Briefchen. 2 Habe seit gestern das neue Gebiß, zunächst auf Probe; wenn es sich bewährt, wird das ältere (geflickte) auf Glanz neu hergerichtet, so daß ich nötigenfalls vom Reservestück Gebrauch machen kann. (Bei mir ist es wegen des ewigen Sprechens sehr wichtig!). Mitgebracht habe ich 1.90, aus vielen Gründen, das unvermeidlich waren. Ende des Monats gehe ich zum Direktor Dr. Halb., um seine neue Art in Empfang zu nehmen (werde darüber sogleich berichten). – Von Mozio u. Familie höre ich auch nichts. Trotzdem schrieb ich an Moz., er solle nun wieder den Jungen schicken. Eigentlich bin ich für ihn sehr überflüssig, er greift nicht aus, hat kein Streben, vielleicht auch nicht die höhere Fassungsgabe (muß ja nicht sein!). – Nun stecke ich schon voller Arbeit für meine beiden Berufe: ich arbeite an den bisher größten {recto} u. schwierigsten (IV.!) Band meines Hauptwerkes, 3 u. für meine Großväter u. Großmütter (meine Schüler!) daneben furchtbar viel! Zwar wäre schon Zeit, daß ich einen Beruf habe, den ersten, aber das Schicksal läßt es gerade davon nicht leben – es bleibt also beim Alten. Vorgestern habe ich endgültig jegliche Auszeichnung abgelehnt, ich kann nie es erlauben. 4 © Transcription William Drabkin, 2024 |

(With me, it is very important because I am constantly speaking!) I registered 1.90 [blood sugar] for many reasons that were unavoidable. At the end of the month, I’m going to Director Halberstam in order to receive his new method (will report about it right away). – I have also heard nothing from Mozio and family. I nevertheless wrote to Mozio that he should send me the boy again. Actually, for him I am quite superfluous, he doesn’t put himself out, has no ambition, perhaps also doesn’t have higher conceptual ability (doesn’t have to be!). – Now I am fully immersed in the work for my two professions: I’m working on the, to date, largest {recto} and most difficult (fourth!) volume of my main work, 3 and alongside that an awful lot for my grandfathers and grandmothers (my students)! To be sure, it would be about time that I have one career, the first one, but destiny doesn’t allow a living from that – things remain, then, as in bygone days. Footnotes1 Writing of this postcard is recorded in Schenker’s diary for September 22, 1928: “An Wilhelm (K.): “An Wilhelm (K.): stecke schon voll Arbeit in beiden Berufen” (“To Wilhelm (postcard): I am already swamped by work in both professions”). — The paragraph-breaks are editorial. 2 Schenker’s diary records the receipt of a letter from Wilhelm that very day, September 22, 1928: “Von Wilhelm (Br.): witzelt, er hätte sich auf den Empfang schon vorbereitet gehabt, doch – lasse ich den Witz beiseite , – ist die Sache die, daß er sich unser sehr erfreut hätte u. freuen würde, schon weil wir Geld ins Haus brächten” (“From Wilhelm (letter): he quips that he had already prepared himself to receive us, yet – I set the joke aside – the fact is that he would have been very happy and would be happy to have us, if only because we would bring money into his house”). 3 Der freie Satz ; reckoning the two parts of Kontrapunkt as separate books, this would be the fourth volume of Schenker’s Neue musikalische Theorien and Phantasien . 4 Heinrich’s diary for September 20, 1928 records: “Zuletzt kam [Dr. Haas] auf die Frage meiner Auszeichnung zurück – ich habe sie unter Anführung meiner Antwort an Deutsch, womöglich noch kräftiger, abgelehnt, dafür aber für Hoboken „eine schallende Auszeichnung von hohem diplomatischen Rang“ gefordert. Es müsse sozusagen ein Exempel statuiert werden, im Auslande soll man wissen, wie Oesterreich einem Fremden dankt, der ihm ein so schönes Gut schenkt. ” (“Finally [Dr. Haas] returned to the question of my commendation – I rejected it with reference to my reply to Deutsch, even more strongly than ever; but demanded for Hoboken "a resounding bestowal of high diplomatic rank." One should make an example of him; in foreign lands, one ought to know how Austria shows its gratitude to a foreigner who has donated such a beautiful gift.”). |
