1 Writing of this letter is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 1/14, p. 556, April 21, 1914: "Brief an Prof. Guido Adler mit Empfehlung von Hans Weisse." ("Letter to Prof. Guido Adler with recommendation for Hans Weisse."). It follows from a conversation that Weisse had with Schenker on March 23, in which he asked about the "music doctorate" (OJ 1/14, p. 543).
