Footnotes
1 The issue at hand is whether to form Schenker's proposed Organisation producirender und reproducirender Künstler
with the aid of Hertzka and Dr. Harpner, or to model it on the Verband der Konzertierenden
Künstler Deutschlands (Federation of Concert Artists of Germany) with the aid of Hugo
Heller (see WSLB 133, August 26,
1912).
2 The letter from
Heller is not known to survive. — Schenker's diary for October 18‒21 records: 18th: "Brief
("Letter to Hugo Heller, opening with the remark that Director Hertzka has offered to take
part.") [...] Von
Heller; Fühlung in sicht." ("No reply from Heller, in spite of my having asked for one.
[...] From Heller, reply; contact in sight."). ‒ 21st: "Einladung v. Heller zu einer
Unterredung.
[...]" ("Invitation from Heller to a meeting. Reply to him, by pneumatic mail,
with a few sentences clarifying the matter. [...]").
3 The meeting with Heller took place on
October 22, as Schenker's diary records: "Unterredung mit Heller in Gegenwart
Florizens.
("Discussion with Heller, in Floriz's presence. In
his letter he had said that, of course, he had no objections regarding Hertzka. In person:
"There is no room for both of us at the same time." Of course, Hertzka had written
similarly, and would probably say the same thing. / The tactic of making me responsible
for trivial matters went amiss: I turned down the invitation to give a lecture in his
salon, likewise to write a preface to a possible new edition of Lenz's book. The question
of
The Little
Library
he left untouched.").
4 The
supplementary payment of 400 Kronen requested by Schenker in WSLB 116, June 2, 1912, for correcting
the proofs of
Beethovens
neunte Sinfonie
, to which Hertzka in principle
acquiesced.
