Wäre Ihnen eine kleine Konferenz mit Prof. Haas u. mir bei mir am 15. 16. 9 (Dienstag) – mit edler Jause – willkommen? Geben Sie mir, bitte, bald Bescheid, damit ich Prof. Haas rechtzeitig einladen kann. 2 Wollen Sie vielleicht die bewußten Abschriften 3 mitbringen. Die Karte des 3 M. an Sie 4 war hinreißend blöd. Ich schrieb u. meinte, der „Umbruch“ solle {2} mir nach Wien (nicht nach Galtür) geschickt werden u. was wurde daraus im Gehirn der 3 M! Ich habe die Sache schon geordnet u. erwarte den „Umbruch“ in den nächsten Tagen, da größere Korrekt. gar nicht vorgekommen sind. Tomay bat ich gestern um die Fortsetzung seiner Sendungen, . . . Der Tag der großen Dankfeierlichkeit naht heran. . . . Sollten manche Fragen, die nur zwischen uns schrieben, am 16. nicht erledigt werden, so werde ich ja bald Gelegenheit haben, wenn ich bei Ihnen „op. 22“ 5 durchsehe, die Fragen mit Ihnen zu {3} erörtern. © Transcription William Drabkin, 2023 |
Would you be agreeable to a small conference with Prof. Haas and me, at my place, on September 15 16 (Tuesday) – with a gourmet snack? Please let me know soon, so that I can invite Prof. Haas promptly. 2 You could perhaps bring the copies in question 3 with you. The postcard from Drei Masken Verlag to you 4 was deliciously stupid. I wrote, and meant, that the page-proofs should {2} be sent to me in Vienna (not to Galtür) and do not know what got into the head of Drei Masken! I have already straightened the matter out and expect the page-proofs in the next few days, as there are no major corrections [to the galley-proofs] at all. Yesterday I asked Tomay to continue sending me his work . . . The day in which we celebrate my immense gratitude is approaching . . . If some questions that we addressed to one another are not resolved on the 16th, then I shall soon have an opportunity to air them when I look through “Op. 22” 5 with you. © Translation William Drabkin, 2023 |

Footnotes1 Writing of this letter is recorded – cryptically – in Schenker’s diary for September 10, 1930: “An Deutsch (Br.): ?” (“to Deutsch (letter): ?”). 2 Schenker’s diary for September 11 records: “An Haas (Br.): Einladung für den 16. d.M.” (“To Haas (letter): invitation for the 16th of the month.”), perhaps implying that Deutsch has agreed to the meeting. The diary for September 16 records: “Von Dr. Schmid (K.): in Vertretung Haas’ über dessen Abwesenheit.” (“From Dr. Schmid (postcard): as Haas’s representative, regarding the latter’s absence.”).
