Dort trifft uns auch Sophie zu ihrer Ueberraschung, da wir gestern ausgemacht hatten, daß sie die Situation so lange hinziehe, bis ich Klarheit auch über den Punkt M. gewinne. — Einer überaus liebenswürdigen Aufmerksamkeit des Stationchefs in Kaschau verdankt Sophie die Wiedergewinnung ihrer Colli. Auf pneumatischem Wege Instruktionen an Sophie mit der Karte des Stationchefs.

Fr. D. hat offenbar das Bedürfnis, den Eindruck Dr ueck von der Seele loszuwaschen u. glaubt es zu erreichen, wenn sie uns den Antrag macht, ihrer Einladung zu „Kain u. Abel“ ¹ in der Oper zu folgen. Das Zinsengehirn übersieht freilich, daß wir dann noch immer mehr an baarem [sic] Gelde draufzuzahlen hätten, als wir durch die 2 Billets [sic] ersparen würden. Zu Abend essen mit ihr, den Abend mit ihr verbringen, sich für 2 Billets verpflichtet fühlen – all’ das hält die Frau für ein Aequivalent des vorenthaltenen Weihnachtsgeschenkes! Sie hält uns offenbar für Coupons, die sie allezeit zu Geld machen kann. Indessen habe ich ihr das Schneiden dieser Coupons hintertrieben!

There we also encounter Sophie, to her surprise, since yesterday we had decided that she should let the situation drag on until I get clarity with respect to M.. — A thoroughly kind attention on the part of the stationmaster in Kaschau enabled Sophie to reclaim her baggage. By pneumatic mail, instructions to Sophie with the stationmaster's postcard.

Mrs. Deutsch evidently needs to cleanse the filth from her soul, and believes she can achieve this by proposing that we accept her invitation to Kain und Abel ¹ at the opera. Her interest-rate brain of course fails to see that we would then still have to pay out more in cash than we would have saved by not buying the two tickets. To have supper with her, to spend the evening with her, to feel obliged to her for two tickets – all this the woman regards as the equivalent of a withheld Christmas present! She apparently regards us as coupons which she can convert into money at any time. However, I prevented her from clipping these coupons!
