Lieber Verehrter! 1

Die morgige Nummer von “Radio-Wien” bringt das plötzlich angesetzte Preisausschreiben, in dessem [recte dessen] Text die Tonarten des neuen Schubertliedes unrichtig genannt sind und in dessen Notenbeigabe der erste Takt etwas lädiert ist. Ihre Ergänzung ist richtig geraten. Ein kleiner Begleitartikel von mir ist auch enthalten. 2 Das Lied wird am Dienstag abends nach 10 Uhr auf Flöte (oder Violine) mit Klavierbglt. gesendet. Ein neuer oder der alte Text werden gesucht. {recto} Sie erhalten ein Exemplar wenn wir uns wiedersehen. Darf ich dann um die Kopie der Komposition aus dem Johannes-Evangelium 3 bitten, wenn Sie sie nicht noch Herrn van H. zeigen wollen?

Tomorrow’s issue of Radio Wien will publish the unexpectedly announced prize competition, in the text of which the tonalities of the new Schubert song are given incorrectly and in the music supplement the first bar is somewhat corrupt. Your completion is given correctly. A short accompanying essay by me is also included. 2 The song will be broadcast on Tuesday evening, after 10 o’clock, on the flute (or violin) with piano accompaniment. A new text, or the old one, is sought. {recto} You shall receive a copy when we next see each other. May I then ask for a copy of the composition from the Gospel According to St. John, 3 if you do not yet want to show it to Mr. Hoboken?

1 Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker’s diary for September 21, 1934: “Von Deutsch (K.): verständigt vom Erscheinen des Schubert-Liedes in der Rf.-Nummer.” (“From Deutsch (postcard): he informs me of the appearance of the Schubert song in the issue of the radio magazine.”).

2 Otto Erich Deutsch, "Ein Schubert-Lied ohne Worte," Radio Wien (September 21, 1934), p. 8. The details of the competition, including a complete transcription of the music, are given on p. 13. The song is in two parts: an A minor alla breve followed by an A major in 6/8; in the accompanying text in Radio Wien , however, it is described as beginning in G major and ending in F sharp minor.

3 This sentence is puzzling, as there are no written-out musical compositions in the Bible; Deutsch may be alluding, in a joking way, to a piece by Johannes Brahms.
