Liebe Lie-lie! 1

Dear Lie-lie, 1

Your letter arrived yesterday, and simultaneously the picture, 2 for which I thank you heartily in the name of Lene. It will be, as regards both its subject and also its means of production, a joy for Lene’s room. The [?export] of the picture did not go so smoothly. We foresaw that granting of entry would have to be obtained, but duty had to be paid on it.

We discussed with Lene that she would not show you any sign of life before the labor of moving house was behind you. 3 Now I have notified her about this via the address: Dr. Horn [female], Vienna IX, Pelikangasse 5. 4 With this postcard I wanted merely to let you know I had received the picture, and that Rosl will write to you in detail.

With most cordial greetings from Rosl and from me,
Your
[signed:] Arnold

I wish you all the best in your new abode.

{recto} Verdict on General Director Sih.: Financial genius, thoroughly honorable man.

Footnotes

1 This postcard is written in Arnold’s debased form of Süttlerinschrift and presents difficulties in decipherment.

2 Most likely the mezzotint that Victor Hammer made of Heinrich in 1925 – hence Rosa’s reference to its “means of production.”

3 The Hasenauer address appears also on OJ 15/26, [4], November 16, Hans Wolf to Jeanette, with the second line “Pension Kramer.” That address is deleted and Vienna XVII, Cottagegasse 21 substituted on the envelope of OJ 14/10, [29], November 27, 1935. By January 6, 1936, her address had become Vienna I, Reichratsstraße 7 III/19 (OJ 11/31, [1], Sophie Guttmann to Jeanette), and that was valid through at least February 2, 1938 (OJ 14/10, [31]).

4 This address is given in Lehmann’s Vienna street directory for 1935 as the residence of Ludwig Horn, MDr., nerve specialist. For Frau Dr. Horn, presumably his wife, no separate entry is given.
