IV. 33 11 | * 4f * || [letter] Fl 1 Über alles Unglück erhebt sich also ein Trost, das Glück des Wiedersehens! Mit Sehnsucht harre ich. 2 Dieser Tage erhältst du die Brahms-Studie mit Erläuterungen von mir, ein schwerer Bissen für die Hohlköpfe von heute! „Erinnerungen an Br.“ erscheinen in München (Kunstwart) 3 Machen deinen Schülern nicht das {2} Herz schwer, sollten sie mit dir kommen, 4 mach ich aus Genuß billiger als ehedem, versteht sich doch heute von selbst. Deine Schwester war am Ostermontag bei uns, liebe Nachschau zu halten[.] Von ihr haben wir dies u. jenes erfahren. Gott mit dir u. deinem Hause!!! IV. 33 11 | * 4f * || [letter] Floriz, 1 Despite all unhappiness, a comfort arises, the joy of a reunion. I await [your arrival] with yearning. 2 In the next few days you will receive from me the Brahms study with elucidations, a difficult bite for the hollow-heads of today! "Recollections of Brahms" will appear in Munich ( Der Kunstwart ). 3 If your pupils are not of {2} heavy heart, they should come with you; 4 if I make [my tuition] cheaper than before, that is self-evident in these times. On Easter Monday your sister was with us, to exchange a bit of news. We learned this and that from her. May God be with you and your house!!! Footnotes1 Writing of this letter is recorded in Schenker's diary for April 21, 1933: “An Floriz (Br): freue mich des Glückes im Unglück – den Schülern nicht bange machen!” (“To Floriz (letter): I am glad of his luck in such circumstances – do not frighten the pupils!”). 2 Violin did not, in fact, return to Vienna until September. 3 Heinrich Schenker, "Erinnerungen an Brahms," Der Kunstwart, xlvi (May 1933), 475–82. 4 Two pupils did in fact come with Violin to Vienna: Hans Wolf, who took theory lessons from Schenker, and Fräulein Weber.
