I. 33 13 | [illeg] || [letter] Meine Lieben! 1 Seit Kindheitstagen in der Haft des Würgengels hat Euer armer Junge doch auch Gottes Licht u. Wunder mitgesehen – vielleicht ist doch besser geboren als ungeboren zu sein –, nur daß ihm die Zeit gar so kurz bemessen war, empört unsere Gefühle sogar wider Gott! Noch hat er nicht einmal geirrt, die Natur selbst u. allein ist an ihm zur Verbrecherin, zur Mörderin geworden! Ihr Alle {2} liebtet ihn – welches Glück für ein Kind! – u. halfet ihm in Freuden ein, so gut Ihr nur könntet, das erhebt Euch über die grausame Natur! Gott stehe Euch weiter bei! Von mir u. I. 33 13 | [illeg] || [letter] My dear ones, 1 Though in the grip of the Angel of Death since his childhood days, your poor boy has also seen for himself God’s light and wonder – perhaps it truly is better to be born than unborn –. It is only that his time was given such a short measure that enrages our feelings even against God! Still, He has not once strayed from his course: Nature, herself alone, has become a sinner, a murderer to Him! You all {2} loved him – what joy for a child! – and helped him with joy in your hearts, as much as you could: that raises you above cruel Nature! May God remain at your side! Footnotes1 Writing of this condolence letter is not recorded in Schenker’s diary. For January 23, his diary records the arrival of the fatal news: “Von Fini Violin (Br.): meldet Karls Hinscheiden über Floriz‘ Auftrag!” (“From Fini Violin (letter): at Floriz’s request, she reports little Karl’s passing!”). The letter from Josephine Violin is not known to have survived. — Schenker may well have begun the present letter the same day and mailed it after the final collection. |
