Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor! 1

I[h]r ergeb[ener]

Dear Director, 1

I would be much obliged if, rather than on the 14th, you would make available to me one or two days earlier, one single (I repeat, 1) 2 copy of the Chromatic Fantasy ! That's how urgently I need one.

With grateful thanks in anticipation,
Your devoted

Footnotes

1 Writing of this letter is not recorded in Schenker's diary; however, the diary for October 7 records: "II1 wird ausgegeben!" ("The first half-volume of Counterpoint is handed over [i.e. delivered to him following publication on October 4]").

2 "sage und schreibe": form used in contracts and agreements, with numerals given before it then the numbers spelt out as words after it (e.g. "1, in words: one") , as Schenker himself does on occasion.
