Ich habe Sie wiederholt im Café des Abends – bis 7^h, u 2mal sogar bis 8^h habe ich leider Stunden zuhause! – aufgesucht, u. offenbar nur zufälligerweise nicht angetroffen. Darf ich Sie bei dieser Gelegenheit mal fragen, ob H. Novak ³ blos einen Akt der Courtoisie Ihnen gegenüber begangen, oder es ernst meint? Es wäre doch schade, einen so guten Aufsatz in der Leere der Courtoisie verschwinden zu lassen! Wollen Sie vielleicht Floriz ein Wort darüber sagen: Sie ersparen sich Mühe des Schreibens u. ich erfahre doch den Sachverhalt.

I have repeatedly looked for you at the coffee-house – unfortunately I teach at home until 7 o’clock, and twice a week even until 8 o’clock – and apparently missed you only by chance. Might I take the opportunity to ask you if Mr. Novak ³ approached you merely as an act of courtesy, or did he mean it seriously. For it would be a pity if such a good essay were to disappear into the void of courtesy. Perhaps you could say a word to Floriz about this: you will save yourself the trouble of writing, and I shall learn the facts.
