Profiles Person Place Organization Work by Schenker Journal Musical Composition Downloads temporarily removed for testing purposes	Edith Fränkl born Czernowitz (Cernauti), May c.3, 1932 Documents associated with this person: Correspondence Youger daughter of Oskar Fränkl and Frieda Fränkl (née Guttmann), grand-niece of Heinrich Schenker; sister of Hilde Fränkl. Edith was born in May 1932 in Czernowitz, capital city of Bukovina, which by the time of her birth was part of Rumania. News of the birth reached Heinrich and Jeanette Schenker by post on May 5. In December 1934, Frieda reported to Heinrich that Edith was a “cheerful, good-natured child of whom everyone is very fond” (OC A/289). By January 1938, Sophie reported to Jeanette that Edith was in kindergarten (OJ 11/31, [1]), and by June 1939 that she was in second grade (OJ 11/31, [3]). Nothing is known of her beyond that date, or of the circumstances of her death. OJ 11/31, [1] Handwritten letter from Sophie Guttmann to Jeanette Schenker, dated January 6, 1938 On her 40th wedding anniversary, Sophie Guttmann reports anxiety about her son Hans and his extravagant wife Edith; she writes also about daughter Frieda and younger son Julien, also Frieda's children, Hilde and Edith Fränkel, and her husband Salo. OJ 11/31, [3] Handwritten picture postcard from Sophie Guttmann to Jeanette Schenker, dated June 19, 1939 Sophie writes on the anniversary of Heinrich Schenker's death, and wonders whether Jeanette visited his grave. -- Hans has been transferred to Belgrade. -- She reports on Julien, Frieda and her daughters, and Salo. OJ 11/31, [4] Handwritten letter from Sophie Guttmann to Jeanette Schenker, dated September 20, 1939 Sophie tells that Julien has been helping rescue people; she and Salo are moving to Czernowitz in November. -- She wishes Jeanette well.
