Mit Dr. Schmid hatte ich jetzt wieder öfters zu tun; er ist mir neuerdings verpflichtet worden, ich habe kein Symptom der Untreue bemerkt; es war wohl nur kindliche Wichtigtuerei, dass er sich mit Hoboken besonders vertraut gab. Schmid ist selbst ziemlich in {2} Not, kann hier nur schwer mehr leben und doch nicht einmal heimfahren in den Ferien. Schmid ist übrigens auch Haas verbunden. I have unfortunately not been able to reply to your letter and postcard ² until today, just in time for the deadline you set. Reasons: troubles and work. Today, my wife went with Gitte to Reichenau for a week, to my sister; and then the two will go to Germany to my wife’s mother. Peter is being well looked after in a holiday home near Mariazell: what will become of him is something that the gods hardly know themselves.

In case Hoboken really comes: I know nothing new, I have learned nothing from him either directly or indirectly; in any event I have still not even written to him. He would not let me order a series of Brahms editions, which we are missing, despite their being offered for a cheap price at Liepmannssohn’s. And so my examination of catalogs and offers, which is often very laborious, is usually in vain, even though I recommend only important things. I now have again been in frequent touch with Dr. Schmid; he has of late been beholden to me. I have observed no sign of disloyalty; it was probably only out of childish boasting that he pretended to be on particularly close terms with Hoboken. Schmid is himself in rather difficult circumstances; {2} he can live here only with difficulty now, and is not even able to travel home in the holidays. Schmid is, moreover, on good terms also with Haas. If he receives support from Hoboken for his Haydn research, I will be sincerely glad for him. In other respects, then, he does not seem so dangerous, in spite of having displayed a certain secretiveness in matters relating to Hoboken.

I sent you the program booklet with Graf’s article as a sign of progress. ³ – Einstein has been dismissed from the Zeitschrift für Musikwissenschaft . ⁴ – I shall publish a fourth Schubert song – Gruppe aus dem Tartarus – in Brahms’s orchestration with Oxford University Press, which has published three of these arrangements. – The Haydn canons are ready in manuscript; they should be published in Karlsbad, or possibly in Berlin. – I am returning the article by Benz with kind thanks. – Through Maag, I have also suggested to Weingartner to perform the sketch of Schubert’s Symphony in E major.
