Fl .

Floriz,

Enclosed, for the time being, are a mere 50 florins. 1 You know my anxiety over travel costs ‒ I don't know how much they will amount to. Once I'm back in Vienna I will then, in a calmer frame of mind, give you a further 50 florins and even more, to pay off the debt. For this much is indeed clear to me, that I can pay down the debt right now ‒ I will not find a better occasion very soon, unless Counterpoint makes its mark. 2 That's how I myself should like it to be, only you must give me time until I am back home. Then I will straighten things out on all sides. Let's hope Mrs. D. will pay up the rest, 3 then all will be fine. No answer yet from Cotta regarding the date. 4 Also the final proof of the Preface is still lacking. I hope it hasn't gone astray during the fire. 5

I was on a tour when I learned of the fire, while I was in [?Weißlehnpfad]. The fire has inflicted a small reduction even on our hotel business, for the two hotels, "Latemar" and "Karerpass," have become so to speak annexes of the large hotel. Now the two stand there like Mrs. Goldschmidt after the death of their husband. 6

What you write about the Trio is so very encouraging. 7 But why then are you nervous? How am I to square that?

Today Mr. Kornfeld arrives, and ‒ after a [period of] downright {2} grandiose excess (in the five weeks easily 50 times!) ‒ I am going into retirement (admittedly with pauses). 8

As soon as the decision from Cotta arrives I will write again.

Footnotes

1 The occasion of Schenker's debt to Violin discussed here is unknown.

2 Kontrapunkt 1 was eventually published on October 4. It sold 114 copies in 1910, earning Schenker 666.33 Marks (OJ 9/32, [26]).

3 Presumably Sofie Deutsch still owed part of what was due to Schenker for lessons in the 1909/10 season.

4 Most likely the date of publication of Kontrapunkt 1. Alternatively, the date of a visit by Schenker to Cotta in Stuttgart to present his idea of the Handbibliothek in person. Schenker wrote to Cotta proposing such a visit on the same day, August 19 (CA 118), to which Cotta replied immediately (OJ 9/31, [26]).

5 i.e. the fire in the Karerpass Hotel, which housed the central postal service for all the hotels in the pass, and which took place the previous week.

6 Mrs. Goldschmidt is alluded to in a postcard from Schenker to Violin: OJ 7/4, [62], April 8, 1910.

7 No letter or postcard from Violin to Schenker survives at this time.

8 Schenker had been at the Karerpass since July 7 (OJ 6/4, [49]), and Jenny Kornfeld was present at least by July 12 (OJ 7/4, [65]), so the two had perhaps been there together (there is no solid proof of Jenny's continuous presence in the interim) for five weeks and three days. The implication (Ausschweifung ‒ which can also mean "extravagance," "aberration," even "debauchery" ‒ ... 50 mal!) is that some intimacy has taken place to which Emil Kornfeld will put a stop (Ruhestand), but that Schenker will not acquiesce completely (Cäsuren). (However, the word grandios, which is rare if not unique in Schenker's vocabulary, is used in OJ 6/4, [49], July 9, 1910, paragraph 3, to describe the mountains around the village, which might cast doubt on the above interpretation.) — Nothing is recorded in this correspondence about Emil's visit or its consequences, and Schenker's diary is uncommonly silent for the whole of the summer months of 1910. We know only that he was back in Vienna by September 21 (OJ 7/4, [68]). For the continuation of the story, see Schenker's correspondence with his publisher J. G. Cotta (CA 127, September 20; CA 129, October 3; OJ 9/31, [27], October 4).
