S“ fertigzustellen. Wie geht es dir, den l. Deinigen? In Gesundheit u. sonst?

Floriz, 1

Miracles do happen. Yesterday evening Hans brought me 3,000 Marks (as remuneration for my last work), 2 with which Furtwängler provided him. He will now continue to make an effort with respect to Free Composition , and it seems almost certain that Free Composition will thereby be entirely secured. 3 Hans has rendered greatest service in these matters; I am very, very pleased also with Furtwängler’s contribution.

Now you can share in my joy! We are leaving on June 14; 4 {recto} it will then be a question of completing Free Composition . How are you, your lovely family? In respect of health, and otherwise?

Many greetings and kisses from the two of us.

Footnotes

1 Writing of this postcard is recorded in Schenker's diary for June 6, 1931: “An Floriz (K.): von Furtwängler M. 3000 erhalten; der freie Satz ist fast gesichert.” (“To Floriz (postcard): 3,000 Marks received from Furtwängler; Free Composition is nearly secured.”). — On June 1, 1931, the diary records: “Von Weisse (Br. expr.): Furtwängler sende 3000 M. — An Weisse (Br. express): sein (F.s) eigenes Geld habe ich nie gemeint (?? LL.), jedenfalls nur dann, wenn Fremde versagen.” (“From Weisse (express letter): Furtwängler is sending 3,000 marks. — To Weisse (express letter): I never meant to take his (Furtwängler’s) own money (?? LL.) – at any rate, only in the event that others fail.”). See also OJ 15/16, [77], June 1, 1931, from Weisse to Schenker.

2 Meisterwerk 3, which was devoted almost entirely to Schenker’s study of Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony.

3 Eventually, Schenker received a gift of 4,000 Shillings from a Viennese industrialist by the name of Paul Khuner, whose wife was a pupil of Weisse’s.

4 i.e. for their Summer vacation in the Tyrol.
