Born in Vienna, where he studied music under Guido Adler and Richard Robert among others, Theo Buchwald held several conducting posts with German opera and concert orchestras up to 1933. He arrived in Santiago, Chile in 1935, then in 1937 moved to Peru, where he founded the National Symphony Orchestra in Lima, serving as its Director and taking it on tour throughout South America for two decades.
While in Santiago, in summer 1936, Jeanette Schenker referred to Buchwald in a letter to Hans Weisse (June 10), spoke with Buchwald by telephone (June 12), then attended a concert conducted by him and spoke to him in person (July 20); two days later he came to tea with Jeanette, who presented him with the prospectus for Der freie Satz (July 22).
