Herr von Kögel was a passenger on the Orazio, the ship on which Jeanette Schenker was also travelling to Chile in May–June 1936. Like her, he disembarked at Valparaiso and travelled on to Santiago, where the two met occasionally in the city and he was able to help her. On her departure from Santiago, he arranged a hotel for her in Valparaiso and assisted her with the transition from train to ship.

He is no relative of Frau von Kögel, Jeanette’s landlady in Santiago, but had travelled to Santiago in order to check whether this was the case or not.
