Geliebte Fanny! 1

Schreibe mir ob Du von SchenkerMarx was gehört hast.

Sei ruhig u nimm Beispiel an Valli
u. Deinen treuesten Bruder

Beloved Fanny, 1

I must give you a report! Things are not good! I am using the money in part to spare him the agony. That is my only care. Beloved Fanny! Be as devout as Vally and I, and you will bear the future boldly. Neumann thinks that a further recovery might still be possible. The level [of danger] will then by drastically reduced. What wish can love decree here?

Write to me if you have heard anything about SchenkerMarx. 2 My thought lies only with Vienna, and that will come about!! If only I could still bring my little Karl with me, then God would have for once become completely gracious.

Be peaceful, and follow the example of Vally
and your most faithful brother

Footnotes

1 Schenker’s diary for January 18, 1933 records: “ Frl. (“Miss Violin comes towards 8 o’clock – leaves behind a desperate letter from Floriz – yet I could not yet speak about this matter.”). She probably passed the letter on in consequence of inquiring after news from Josef Marx and the prospects of a position for her brother at the Vienna Akademie. (Schenker used the verso of the letter to list some of the music illustrations for Der freie Satz .)

2 i.e. the planned meeting between Schenker and Josef Marx, which took place on January 18, 1933. Schenker’s diary records for January 15 and 16: “Frl. Violin von ½12–¼1h: berichtet Tragisches.” – “Von Frl. Violin (K. express): Vorsicht bei der Konferenz mit Marx.” (“Miss Violin from 11:30 to 12:15: she reports tragic news.” – “From Miss Violin (express postcard): be careful at the meeting with Marx.”).
