Louis Schiff
born Aussig on the Elbe (Ústí nad Labem), December 4, 1875
Documents associated with this person:
Younger brother of Jeanette Schenker, hence brother-in-law to Heinrich Schenker from 1919, also brother to nine other Schiff siblings.
Second child and first son of Wilhelm (Wolf) Schiff and Emilie Schiff (née Strasser), Louis was born sixteen months after Jeanette, yet despite the closeness in age there is no known contact between the two beyond at latest 1910. There is only one reference to him in Heinrich Schenker’s diary (September 13, 1919), which indicates that Louis was in contact with his youngest brother, Paul Schiff.
Louis married Hermine Hahn (1880–), and the couple had two children: Trude (1903–44) and Wilhelm (1907–). Nothing is otherwise known of his life, profession, whereabouts, or death, except for an isolated reference in a letter from Rosa Weil to Jeanette in April 1938: “Things are not well with Louis; he is struggling one.” (OJ 14/10, [34]).
In April 1936, when Jeanette Schenker embarked on her voyage to Santiago, Chile, and back, heading first to Aussig where she spent three days, she visited Louis and met his wife and daughter on the 27th.
