Mountain pass in the Eastern Northern Limestone Alps connecting Lower Austria [Niederosterreich] to Styria [Steirmark]. 70 km (c. 43 miles) southwest of Vienna, 65 km (40 miles) north-northeast of Graz, and containing the towns of Gloggnitz, Schottwien, and Mürzzuschlag, it was by the mid-19th century accessible by train from Vienna to Gloggnitz, and also by road. Semmering-Kurort is a spa, and Stuhleck, near Spital-am-Semmering, is a ski area.
