It is situated 12 km (c. 8 miles) from Kautzen, where Wilhelm Schenker and his family lived, and 100 km (c. 60 miles) north-west of Vienna. Schenker's mother, Julia Schenker, was buried inthe Jewish cemetery there. Her gravestone was erected there in 1923, and Jeanette and Heinrich visited it on September 13, 1923 (OJ 3/4, pp. 2566-2567; OJ 5/45, [4]). A Jewish religious community [Kultusgemeinde] existed in Waidhofen, and is referred to in Schenker's diaries. Heinrich encourages Wilhelm and his family to move from Kautzen permanently, and in that connection will investigate the cost of having Julia Schenker's body moved from Waidhofen to Vienna for burial with the cooperation of the Vienna Kultusgemeinde. He envisions purchasing burial plots for Jeanette and himself adjacent to Julia's grave. He thanks Dodi for her invitation to stay with them if Vienna becomes intolerable. OJ 5/38, [2] Handwritten letter from Heinrich Schenker and Jeanette Kornfeld to Wilhelm and Dodi Schenker, dated February 5, 1918 Heinrich relays back the price of transferring Julia Schenker's body from Waidhofen to Vienna, and would hope to get a discount on that price via the Jewish Religious Community. He reports on the planned Festschrift for his 50th birthday, and his current troubles with UE. Jeanette characterizes their life as "farcical," and asks Dodi's advice in obtaining twine for repairing shirts. She comments on the Versailles Council of War as confirming Heinrich's warnings.
