The Verein Beethoven-Haus (Association for the Beethoven House) was founded in 1889 to purchase and restore the house in Bonn (Bonngasse 20) in which Beethoven and his family lived from his birth in 1770 to 1774, and to preserve it and conserve the collections of materials contained in it (comprising musical manuscripts, letters, musical instruments, pictures, and artefacts). The Beethoven-Archiv was established my Ludwig Schiedermair in 1927 in a neighboring house ("Im Mohren") as a scholarly research institute.

The Beethoven-Haus and Schenker

Schenker had dealings with the Verein in 1913 and 1914 in order to obtain photographs of autograph materials for his Erläuterungsausgabe -- Die letzten fünf Sonaten von Beethoven .

The correspondence that survives numbers fourteen items: three from deputy chairman Ferdinand August Schmidt to Schenker (OC B/203‒205), three from Schenker to Schmidt (BNba 304g, [1], [8]; BNba 318, [2]), internally three from Schmidt to the chairman, Ernst Zitelmann (BNba 304g, [2], [3], [7]), one from Schmidt to an unidentified colleague (BNba 304g, [4]), one from Schenker to Zitelmann (BNba 304g, [5]), a document from Schenker implicitly addressed to the board of directors (BNba 304g, [6]), one from Zitelmann to Schenker [BNba 304, [4a]), and one from Schenker to photographer Heinrich Rose (BNba 318, [1]).
