High mountain pass (1,745m) in the Dolomites, 36 km (22 miles) long, connecting the South Tyrol (now part of Italy) to the Trentino, starting at Welschnofen, 21 miles southeast of Bolzano. Nearby is the lake Karersee (Lake Carezza).

Heinrich Schenker spent the summer of 1910 at the Karerpass Hotel in the company of his future wife Jenny Kornfeld (née Schiff), who was, according to Schenker's diary of August 15, 1912, born there ("From the summit of the [Luisa Pass], a gentle glance east at the Karerpass, Lie-Liechen's birthplace."). In her travel diary to Chile, Jeanette reminisces on August 15, 1936: “On August 15, 1910, the Karersee Hotel burned down; we were in Weißlahnbad(?). I wonder whether anything was said about this in the diary.” Heinrich and Jeanette traveled through the pass in 1913 on their way to vacation in Pfund (Fondo), and again in June 1914, when they heard the news of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by way of the Karerpass Hotel.
