Austrian politician.
A member of the Austrian Social Democrat Party from 1896, Renner represented that party in the Austrian parliament (Reichsrat) from 1907. Following the First World War and the St. Germain Treaty, he served as Austrian State Chancellor (Staatskanzler) from 1918 to 1920. He was President of the Representative Assembly from 1931 to 1933. He always pleaded for the annexation of Austria by Germany but distanced himself from politics during the war. Just before the end of the Second World War, Renner set up a Provisional Government in Austria in April 1945, and served as the first post-war Austrian Chancellor from late 1945, and the first President of the Second Republic.
