Alsace-Lorraine [Elsaß-Lothringen]

A territorial entity created by the German Empire in 1871 after the annexation of most of Alsace and parts of Lorraine in the Franco-Prussian War. At the end of World War I, in November 1918, French troops entered Alsace-Lorraine, and the territory reverted to France under the Treaty of Versaille (1919).
